Pergolas are outdoor garden structures, used as outdoor living spaces or outdoor rooms. They’ve become increasingly popular in recent years, with wooden pergolas also becoming increasingly common, alongside more traditional aluminium pergola and metal pergola designs.

Pergolas can differ greatly, with many variations on the theme available. These garden structures are usually used to cover walkways and paths, with vines and other plant life often used to add a pretty touch. They’re sometimes considered to be a form of gazebo and may also be installed as an extension of an existing building or terrace — although many people choose to have standalone pergolas as well.

Another similar form of garden structure is the arbour. Whilst arbours can be combined with pergolas, they’re technically different. Most of the time, an arbour is classed as a set of bench seats with a roof, often made from wood (although this is not definitive).

Lean-to pergolas

Lean-to pergolas are one of the most popular forms of pergola on the market at present, having a long and rich history through the centuries. Pergolas are thought to have originated in Italy, with the term itself coming from the Latin word “pergula” — loosely translated as “projecting eave”.

Lean-to pergolas are built as adjoining structures to existing buildings, adding extra room and space to your home, as well as brightening up your garden.

By adding a lean-to pergola to your property, you can add extra value to your home. You’ll also create an extra room to use, which could be particularly useful when entertaining in the summer months.

If it rains, the water is passed down through the blades, before being filtered through the attached drainage system in the posts. The watertight seal is not just limited to the roof either, with the sides of the building also being protected.

Fantastic ventilation is another plus — by opening the roof blades, you can let a cool breeze inside the structure, which is perfect for those hot summer days. The roof blades open at a 135-degree angle, operating in a synchronised movement that’s absolutely optimal for this type of structure.

Sun protection is also included — the roof blades are made of aluminium, providing optimum protection against the sun when closed. You have full control over the amount of light visible, also enabling you to open the roof blades on sunny days to let a little more light into the building.

The louvred roof is fitted with a series of automatic sunscreen blades that rotate up to 140 degrees, in order to adjust light and air circulation. In case of rain, the blades can be closed completely for total protection. This system allows the water to drain along the perimeter gutters, which are seamlessly integrated into the structure.
